Point clouds in Revit: performance and visibility tips, collected

Point clouds in Revit can be slow and confusing. Here are some things that tend to help. Please add your own, and correct anything that doesn't match your experience.

Before Revit

  • Clean and unify in your registration software or ReCap first. Remove noise, people and cars before indexing.
  • Split big projects into regions (by level, building or zone) so you only load what you need.
  • Decimate where you can. Modelling a wall rarely needs millimetre spacing across the whole site.

Linking

  • Decide on coordinates before you link: origin to origin, or by shared coordinates. Mixing them up is the most common cause of a cloud appearing far away from the model.
  • Keep point cloud files on a fast local or network drive, not a slow sync folder.
  • Put the point cloud on its own workset so people can unload it.

Visibility

  • If a cloud disappears in some views, check the view range, the far clip offset, section boxes and the Point Clouds tab in Visibility/Graphics.
  • Use scope boxes and section boxes to limit what each view shows.
